Morning Thrive - "Envy"

Written by Pastor Craig Etheredge  |  Found in: Morning Thrive

Hey everybody!  Welcome back to Morning Thrive! This week we're talking about envy. That green monster of envy. Have you ever been envious? Ever looked at somebody and said, "I wish I had what they had," or "I wish I looked like they looked." In Psalm 37, King David is writing the Psalm and he says very simply in Psalm 37 verse 1, "Be not envious." Don't be envious! And you may say, "Craig, what do you mean by envy anyway?" Well, envy has two parts to it: envy first off has desire. "I desire something that that person has/ has accomplished/ does." And there's nothing wrong with that, to desire somebody that's godly, or to desire to have a great marriage like they have, or a desire to be successful in a job like they are. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. But the second part of envy is where it turns dark, and that when I desire it and I resent the fact that I don't have it and I resent the fact that they have it. And I want it! And I don't want them to have it. And I'm upset, and I turn negative on the inside because they have something that I don't have, and it churns up all kinds of anger and hostility and frusteration and dissatisfaction in me. That is when envy turns evil. Do not be envious. So this week we're going to talk about that: how do I win over envy? And how can I deal with envy in my own heart and put it away forever? We're going to talk about that this week, it's going to be a great week! I'll see you tomorrow.
